The editorial "Rejuvenated Mindset" from The Daily Herald dated August 24, 2024 discusses the rebranding of St. Maarten Academy P.S.V.E. to St. Maarten Academy Vocational Business Campus (VBC). The article highlights that this change marks a "new era" for the institution, celebrating 25 years of educational excellence and dedication to vocational studies.

The editorial explains that while the school has long empowered students academically and practically, the new name reflects a vision for growth, ambition, and fostering dreams. The shift emphasizes the increasing importance of vocational education, particularly in Sint Maarten’s tourism-driven economy, where service-oriented and hands-on skills are crucial. The article argues that vocational training helps prepare local students for jobs that might otherwise go to guest workers.

Ultimately, the editorial supports the rebranding, stating that it’s not just about a name change but about embracing a rejuvenated mindset toward education and career readiness.

Event Recap: Historic Flag raising ceremony and Pre-St. Maarten Day Celebration at St. Maarten Academy Vocational Business Campus

Philipsburg, St. Maarten — November 8, 2024

The St. Maarten Academy Vocational Business Campus held its first-ever Pre-St. Maarten Day celebration, setting a historic milestone with a moving flag-raising ceremony conducted by the Voluntary Corps St. Maarten (VKS). This was the first time in 25 years the school has hoisted its three (3) flags, marking a significant moment of unity and pride. The initiative was led by a former student, now a dedicated VKS soldier, whose vision brought this symbolic ceremony to life. The school management embraced and supported this vision, making it a centerpiece of the day’s events.

The event began with a powerful performance of the National Anthem by Police Sergeant A. Blijden, filling the air with a sense of patriotism. The ceremony highlighted the importance of honoring national traditions and celebrating the spirit of St. Maarten.

In attendance was the Honorable Minister of Education, Culture, Youth, and Sports—also serving as Minister of Justice—Mr. Lyndon C.J. Lewis. Minister Lewis delivered a heartfelt speech, sharing his personal journey of overcoming challenges and inspiring students to pursue their ambitions with resilience. His words resonated with the young audience, many of whom are aspiring entrepreneurs looking to make their mark in St. Maarten’s future.

Adding a personal touch to the event, guest speaker Ingemar Arndell, an alumnus of the former St. Maarten Academy PSVE, shared his story of perseverance. His candid remark, “Yes, I am a high school dropout,” followed by “Look at me now,” served as a powerful reminder of the importance of determination and self-belief. Arndell’s testimony was a beacon of hope for many students, reinforcing that setbacks are merely setups for comebacks.

The celebration continued with the school’s Entrepreneur Booth Program, showcasing the talents and creativity of its students. Awards were presented in categories like “Most Sales,” “Most Creative Decor,” and “Best Customer Service,” highlighting the students’ hard work and innovation. The program demonstrated the school’s commitment to fostering a practical understanding of business and entrepreneurship among its students.

The day was further enriched by captivating performances from students, including poetry, music, and other creative displays, adding to the festive atmosphere. The event concluded with the opening of the student booths, allowing attendees to engage with the young entrepreneurs and enjoy their products, creating a lively and vibrant marketplace on campus.

This historic celebration not only marked the beginning of St. Maarten Day festivities but also left a lasting impression on students, faculty, and community members alike. It was a day of inspiration, unity, and pride, setting a strong foundation for future events. The school looks forward to continuing this new tradition in the years to come.
